Dial in Suffolk

This is a horizontal sundial on a baluster style pedestal by the north-east corner of the church. It indicates BST hours from 6am to 8pm in Roman numerals, with a smaller dial at the centre indicating GMT hours. No hour subdivisions are shown. Inside the chapter circle are inscribed, read from the south and inside, ’SPRING’ on the west, ’SUMMER’ (north), ’AUTUMN’ (east) and ’WINTER’ (south), with floral ornamentation. A replacement triangular plate gnomon has been fitted, but has the incorrect sloping angle and is also misplaced by 180 degrees. The sundial is a memorial to Elsie M Hipperson who died in 1982.
