Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Cambridgeshire

This is a replica dial made of resin. It is mounted, to the south east of the south entrance porch, on a plain plinth with circular cross section, standing on square sectioned base. The gnomon on the original dial had been torn off but recovered and the dial was repaired in 2002 by John Davis, who made this replica. The original is now in a secure place. The north-west corner of the dial is missing (as on the original), and a section is broken away (but still present) on the centre of the west side. The aligned Roman hour numerals are to be read from inside the dial. The hours range from 4am to 8pm with both fours as IIII and noon as XII. There is a noon gap. The hour lines join to a large circle centred on the gnomon root and just touching the chapter ring to the south. Unusually there are 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16 hour divisions. N, S, E, W are marked, near the chapter ring, to be read from various directions (the ’N’ is reversed). The solid plate gnomon has a sigmoidal rear edge and ’hooked’ tip. Motto: "WEE MVST". This was a popular motto when the dial was made and is a pun on ’Wee mvst dy-all’ with the last part taken as read. The date ’1665’ is below the motto. Inscribed in the south section of the chapter ring: ’THOMAS SOAME’ . He is believed to have been the donor of the original dial, rather than the maker.
