Welford House, Welford

An octagonal plate on a square sectioned fluted plinth, which once held a larger and better dial. The top and base have diminishing layered features. The dial is a ’Garden Centre’ model, with a motto ’A shadow round about . . . / The Sunny Hours of Day’. Hours are IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, read from inside, with no hour lines. The gnomon is fixed 180 degrees out of position. This dial (photo 6324a) was not secured and was sitting on top of the dial in photo b. This second dial, of similar provenance, appears to have a motto ’Here Roses . . . / But I Go On For Ever’. The gnomon is missing but on each side of the gnomon line can be seen ’L V’. Hours are IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, with Arabic numerals for BST around the perimeter, both rings read from the outside.
