Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Cambridgeshire

Probably installed by William Hake in 1663, following the Restoration of the Monarchy after the Civil War. Circular dial plate but with oblong sides to squared-off base. Mixed Roman and Arabic numerals: VI 7 8 9 10 11 + 1 2 3 4 5 VI. Cross patty at noon. Around upper part of dial ’O BEATA SOLITUDO, O SOLA BEATITUDO; MIHI OPIDUM CARCER EST, ET SOLITUDO PARADISUS’. At the centre ’PARADISUS W + M’. In lower part of dial ’DEUS NOBISCUM, ET CORONA MANUUM OPUS NOSTRUM’ followed by a crown. Lower part of squared-off section ’1663 CAROLUS SECUNDUS’. See Mrs Gatty for translations. The reports for this dial include selected extracts from ’Vivat Carolus Secundus’, a history of 30 Priestgate, Peterborough. The dial is mounted high on a south facing gable end at the rear of the building, above a flat roofed extension, not visible from the street. Gnomon incorrect - root in wrong place and angle looks too steep - possibly a replacement. Ref Gatty No 863 with drawing which shows a different gnomon.
