The dial shows 4am to 8pm in half hours, using XII and IIII, the numerals read from inside the dial. The initials IE (of John Endicott, Governor of Salem) surround the date. The solid gnomon has the rear edge scalloped, and is inscribed ’Salem’ on the west side. A circle at the root is filled with star motif. The dial is registered by NASS, and is possibly the oldest in the USA. It may now be owned by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, London.
