St Mary’s Church, Newchurch in Pendle

This is a vertical stone dial which sits high on a corbel over the west end of the church nave. It is canted east to face due south and shows the hours in a horseshoe formation from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm, aligning the numerals with the hour lines and using X for noon and IIII for four. The top of the dial shows the date of 1718 and four sets of initials: HP, CB, IB and IV.
