Tyler Cottage, Tylers Green

This vertical direct south bronze dial is mounted on a wall which faces WNW. It shows the hours Vi - VI divided into halves. There is a noon gap but the delineation is incorrect since the Vi am and pm lines are below the horizontal. There is a solid gnomon with a sigmoidal underside and a semicircular sunburst surrounding the gnomon root. It carries the date 1679 which may well be spurious. This dial shows striking similarities to the dial at St Michael, Ilsington, Devon which is undated, has the VI lines horizontal and a different gnomon. In both dials there is a curious tilt to the side numerals. Both dials have the same motto ’Vigila Oraque’ (Watch and Pray) in Gothic script. The dial is about 500mm square.
