BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Hartland Abbey, Hartland

In the garden is a spherical dial set on a barley-sugar twist pillar about 1800mm high. The iron axis of the globe should point to the Pole Star but is incorrectly aligned. Arabic numerals round the equator show 24 hours undivided. The sphere casts its own shadow - the terminator - which indicates the time. If the alignment were to be corrected this would be a useful dial, particularly in the summer.
