BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
It is unusual to find a sundial in the grounds of a hospital but this one near the entrance is worthy of our attention. The slate dial plate declines and is also inclined in such a way to make it readable from the footpath It was put in place in 2003 and is the work of Ben Jones who has designed and made many fine sundials. It can show the hours from 3am until 8pm but numerals are only provided from 5am to 6pm. A inscriptions read: "1936 John 2001" and "Sorrow may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning". It measures 431mm in diameter.
