Dial in Monaghan

This is one of two dials in the private collection of Vincent McAree of Ballinode, 8Km north-west of Monaghan Town on the R186. It has a square dial plate with a circular time scale, and skull and crossbones, coffin and cross as décor in the spandrels. It shows 4am to 8pm in half and quarter hours, using XII and IIII, the numerals read from inside the dial. There are two mottoes, with parts still visible. They have Masonic connections, reading: "Sapientia Pulchritas & Vitus" and "Sit Lux et Lux Fuit". The maker Daniel Nistel is known to have joined a local Masonic lodge in July 1794. The initials TW appear on a lead insert near the base of the gnomon.
