BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
A sculptural piece of steelwork that stands out 4.6m from the side of one of the new office buildings. The cantilever holds in position a steel disk that places a spot of sunlight on to a figure-of-eight analemma carved into the south face of the building. All months are indicated, with days marked off every two days in blue. Spring and Autumn equinoxes are marked by lines in March and September; Summer and Winter Solstices by vertical lines in June and December.
All the day strips are one degree of hour-angle wide. The light falls on the west edge at two minutes before Local Mean Noon and falls on the east edge at two minutes after Local Mean Noon. Half-way along is Local Mean Noon itself.
Paternoster Square is a little to the west of the Greenwich Meridian and 12h GMT is marked by the line joining the tips of the triangular appendages to the strips. The strip for 29 February has an inward-pointing triangle which is hard to see because the strip is (a little) less than one-quarter the height of its neighbours. This is because the length of the Tropical Year is not quite 365.25 days.
