BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The sundial rests on a ’witch’s seat’ on the central chimney facing the road. It is canted slightly to the west in order to face due south. The rectangular slate dial has quarter circular cut outs at the top corners.
There are hour lines and half hour marks from 6am to 6pm but the upright Roman numerals run from 7 to 5 with XII for noon and IIII for 4.
The substantial rod gnomon has a single rod supporter ending with a stirrup.
The carving is crisp and the profile is not the usual V but a squared U.
The date at the top 1720 sits above the letters H DM (as a monogram). At the foot of the dial ’EC 1884 M de C’
There Is an heraldic shield in the middle of the dial believed to be the arms of the Payn and the Trinity branch of the De Carteret families.
