BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Chippenham Park, Newmarket

Beautiful detailed engraving characterises this fine bronze horizontal dial, which is to be found on the patio in front of the house. There are Equation of Time rings with precision to the minute. Roman hour numerals, which include IIII, are to be read from outside the dial. In the noon gap is ’Snailwell’, the next village. William Nelson Last, the maker, worked between 1830 and 1864 so the dial must lie within this time. It bears a coat of arms and the motto: ’IN SPE SPIRO’ (I breathe in hope). The dial is supported on a circular baluster pedestal with acanthus decoration below.
