St Mary’s Church, Hanley Castle

This unusual scaphe dial in the churchyard is a memorial to the Royle family. It shows the undivided hours 6am to 6pm but there are no lines to mark the equinoxes or solstices The motto reads: "While the light lasts and in the darkness" .The dial is 110mm in diameter and dates from the 1930s. The design is similar to the Mary Watts dial shown in SRN 0510 at Compton, Surrey, and 6273 at Farnborough, Hants. A mass dial can be seen on the church wall.
