Dial in Oxfordshire

Although this dial bears the date 1805 it is not to be believed since it is more likely to have been made late in the 20th century. It is also wrongly orientated. The blue aluminium dial plate is octagonal, measuring about 300mm across. It shows the usual hours IV to VIII undivided and in tne centre is an 8-point compass rose. The decorative gnomon bisects the sides but does not appear to have a noon gap. There is a motto on the dial plate which reads, ’L’Heure passe l’amitie reste’ while round the top of the octagonal stone capital is a second motto saying ’You may waste but cannot stop me’. This capital is supported by a circular section pillar on a square base.
