BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The dial was mounted with four large retaining bolts on a square section pedestal with square capital and base, the pedestal bearing a memorial inscription, a few metres south of the south porch. The dial was missing its gnomon and was extremely oxidised but all the inscriptions could still be read with care. It is inscribed ’Jwade’, and signed ’Thos Hart 1773’. It has two time rings, showing 4am to 8pm in 30, 15, 10, 7.5 and 2 min marks. It uses XII and IIII, with numerals read from inside the chapter ring and aligned with the hour lines. There is a decorative roundel in each spandrel. The dial is similar to SRN 4131 at Milton Regis, a few miles away.
The inscription on the base slab is ’THIS ANCIENT SUNDIAL HAS [BEEN] / [R]e-ERECTED TO THE MEMORY [OF] / [CL]ARA HINGE OF [??...NE…S…FARM??] / [P]ARISH AS A …] / FROM…./’. A number of Hinges of Iwade are recorded on a gravestone to the east of the graveyard. Their dates of death span 1864 to 1904.
The dial was stolen in 2009, but was recovered in 2019, having been thoroughly cleaned and fitted with a new but inappropriate gnomon. As at August 2019 it is hoped that the dial will be returned to the church.
