This dial is in a walled garden at Turkey Mill Court. Seen in February 2015, the dial appears to be mounted on top of an earlier dial described below. The current dial is virtually the same diameter as the original and is modern, with Arabic numerals read from the outside giving hours from 4am to 8pm. Hours are divided into 30, 15 and 7.5 minute marks and the hour lines run through the numerals. A noon gap splits the ’1’ and ’2’ of the ’12’. There is a centre compass rose surrounding a sun’s face. The gnomon is not firmly fixed. A motto round the outer edge reads: ’Turn your face to the Sun and the Shadow will fall behind you’. The pedestal is as described below.
The description of the earlier dial reads:
In a walled garden at Turkey Mill, this is a handmade dial which shows 6am to 6pm in hours. The Roman numerals use the form XII and IV. The numbers are stamped rather than engraved, making the dial look rather crude. Numerals read from inside and are aligned with the hour lines. The gnomon is of sheet metal with a 4 hole motif in the centre and has a bulbous rear edge. The dial is inset into an excellent bulbous Chilstone Stone pedestal with pseudo acanthus décor to the lower part. It has a circular capital and a square plinth on large circular base set into the grass.
