BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
This is an analemmatic dial which tells the time by the direction from which the sun is shining. Since this varies throughout the year for any particular hour, a north-south pathway is provided on which is engraved the months of the year. To use the dial, the observer needs to stand on this path as close to the current date as can be judged and his own shadow will indicate the date among the hour markers. Single date scale and two time scales each adjusted for longitude. Elaborately engraved date plate extolling the pilchard catch and tourism. Shows 7am to 6pm GMT. Explanatory plaque nearby. Time capsule under date plate.
