BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Borders Region

We have very little information about this dial. The pedestal might be a converted stone font. It is apparently dated 1888 but this may or may not be the date of the dial. The Retreat was built as a hunting lodge by the Earl of Wemyss in 1784. The possible maker’s name is based only on the use of a bisected hemispherical gnomon side supporter which was known to have been used by either or both of the Richards Bate. Further information requested.
