BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
Compass in centre surrounded by Equation of Natural Days - Watch Slower/Faster type. EoT zeros at June 16th, Dec 23.5, April 15th. Then Chapter ring then on the outer edge (and very worn) the time divisions. Shows 4am to 8pm in 30, 15, 7.5 marks and also in 10 and 1mins on outer scale. These latter with Arabic Nos. Uses XII and IIII. Viewed from outside. This appears to be more elaborate than the only other known Bolton Dial (SRN 2731 - now stolen) apart from one in the British Museum. Half hour markers are double inward and outward. Banding design between rings. Date only readable to last digits "--CXII". Design Lat and Long - only Long readable as W0323. Fifteen cities listed. Acapulco, Charlestown, Barbados, St Catherine’s, Madiera, Madrid, Paris, Rome, Constantinople, Moscow, Ispaha, S????, Madras, Bantam, Pekin. No arrows to time of noon at these places but instead a tiny ’XII’ (only two minute divs long!) is inserted between the city and the outer minute time scale. Gnomon root offset from dial centre by 87mm. Unusual gnomon support having single main curve but with a ’return’ at the base and scalloping at the top. Gnomon aligned opposite flats of the dialplate. Maker’s name engraved on a ribbon containing a crown like engraving with the date. Inscr reads: "Calculated and made by D Bolton of Kimbolton". Mounted on original bulbous circular section stone pedestal 970h and 490 diam capital. Dial known originally to have been at the Victorian/Georgian Stonely Hall, Hatchet Lane, Kimbolton in Tudor Garden having an unusual curved wall. Brought to Thrapston then, in 1985 , here to the Charity School House. <
