BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
Motto reads: "Why stand ye here idle time passes while you look". Shows 5am to 6pm in half and quarter hours. Inward pointing half hour markers end in fleurs de lys. Uses XII and IV. Hour lines drawn to points of sunburst around gnomon root. Replacement gnomon fitted. Black lettering and lines on board. Now high up in Tudor gallery of Museum. The original owner was William Smart and the dial was above the gateway into the courtyard of Smart’s Quay, Key Street, Ipswich. The date is late 16c or early 17c. Also refer to SRN 4585 which was fixed at an angle of 270 degs to this dial. Dial discovered under a later one when building demolished.
