BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Dorset

The dial is on the south lawn, between the Gate House and the main House. It is not aligned correctly and is probably not in its original position as it is overshadowed by buildings, but it was at this location at least before WW2. Most markings are worn away, with only numerals 7 and 8 and quarter hour lines visible. The dial is mounted on a stone baluster pedestal 1500h. On the north face of the dial (though currently positioned to face south) is the inscription ’Umbra videt umbram / vive hodie’ (a shadow marks the shadow, live to day). This motto was noted by Gatty ’On a pedestal dial at Bradford Peverell House, near Dorchester’. Bradford Peverell is very close to Wolfeton so possibly this is the same dial.
