BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
On wall to left of bay window on this house on the main road running through Brough (A66). Motto reads: ’Certa ratio tempus fugit mors venit. Circular chapter ring on square plate in lozenge orientation on a red sandstone backing which holds the date and motto. In the top section of the chapter ring, ’John Thompson Esq’. Above the gnomon root, ’1747’. Most unusually for a vertical dial numerals are read from inside the chapter ring. Hour lines drawn to outer of two double circles around gnomon root. Date on restored back stone is 1847, at odds with the date on the dial. Gnomon has scalloped under edge and rear.
