BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

The Picket House, St Helier

The dial is painted on limestone that fills a window on a building previously used by the military garrison as a picket house. Note the use of Arabic as well as Roman numerals with 0 for noon. There is a simple rod gnomon and single supporting rod that is slightly displaced. The dial was made by Elias Le Gros, a talented Jerseyman, sometime around 1825. After being maintained for many years (it needs repainting every 20 years or so), there was a dispute and the military authorities removed the gnomon and the dial was cemented over. After a press campaign the dial was restored in 1888 with a new gnomon, fresh cut lettering and new paint. The inscription on a plaque below the dial reads: "NOTE Regulate your clocks by the sun dial. Correction must be made for the Equation of Time which is in all the almanacks".
