Mortuary Chapel (1), Arbroath

The Mortuary Chapel is located in the Western Cemetery about 25 minutes walk from Hospitalfield House, and can claim to be one of the best buildings of its date in Scotland.. There are two dials with acanthus borders about 30ft up on the tower, S and W facing; this is the S one. It shows 6am to 6pm in Roman numerals, with half hours and quarters. An engraved panel at the base gives the EOT correction for three days every month. The mausoleum was commissioned by Patrick Allan-Fraser and the carving was carried out by the local stonemason James Peters. Ref: Overlooked Britain, Lucinda Lambton, The Oldie, June 2015, pp70-71.
