BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
The Millennium Timespace - a huge paved horizontal sundial on the waterfront.
The sundial was commissioned to celebrate the Millennium and links Holy Trinity Church to the waterfront.
The outer circle has numbers from 1 to 12 arranged as a clockface, with 12 being west of the vertical mast in the centre. The shadow of the mast falls on this ring, but should not be imagined to tell the time. Inside, within a blue ring, are the hour lines used to tell time from 8am to 4pm. Octagonal metal plaques along the line due north of the mast also indicate the date at exactly noon by the sun. The time and date are indicated by the centre of the shadow of two cones with their points together, 4m high. The cones are hollow and light shines through them at noon to form a spot of light on the dial. These cones are a reference to Einstein’s space-time light cone diagram.
Around the base of the mast a motto reads: "Here and now point". There are also inscriptions of two quotes from Einstein. The dial surface is paved in a circular design, part grey part blue, of textured and stained concrete. Around it is a mosaic showing scenes from Gosport’s history. A digital clock in the gateway to the area chimes at quarter hour intervals and illuminates lights let into the paving: red for the hours, green for 5min periods and white for five seconds.
