BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

All Saints’ Church, East Lockinge

This vertical south-facing dial is painted high on the tower. It is approximately shield shaped but with a curved lower edge. It is painted in black on (cleaned) sandstone with full length hour lines and short quarter hour marks from 7am to 5pm. The Roman hour numerals use XII at noon and IIII at 4pm. The ’V’s are drawn to be read from within the dial so VII and VIII appear as IIV and IIIV if read left-to-right. This is perhaps to allow the ’I’ characters to align with the hour lines and is not uncommon on sundials. Note that nothing was visible in 1994; In 2000 it was reported to have been repainted ’recently’. The current photo is from 2008. It is previously known to have been renovated c 1900. The tower dates from 1564. The simple strip gnomon with a single straight supporter could be of any age. It is, correctly, over the 12 o’clock line as the wall faces due south. Note that access is believed to be on foot only. Ref: WH Mallam, History of the Parish of East Lockinge, 1900
