HMS Excellent, Portsmouth (off shore)

Memorial dial in the rose garden to The Baron Chatfield 1873-1967. Shows 4am to 8pm in half hours. Zodiac signs engraved on outside of equator ring. Arrow gnomon. Sited on top of rectangular ’L’ shaped Portland stone pedestal with Noon gun on lower ’shelf’ of the ’L’. Burning glass pivoted against a date scale permits action of the gun. Inscriptions recording the layout of the garden and the Baron’s lifetime roles are on two plaques on either side of pedestal.
