Dial in Hampshire

This is an excellent memorial dial in the churchyard, to the east of the porch. It shows 4am to 8pm in 30,15 and 5 minute intervals. The hour numerals are Roman, aligned with the hour lines and read from outside the dial. They use IV at 4 o’clock and XII at noon. Half hours are marked with fleurs de lys and diamonds. There is a noon gap for the substantial gnomon width. Inside the chapter ring are cardinal point markers: N, S, E and W. On the south side is the maker’s name: "R.I.Bright, London". The gnomon is very solid, but with a most elegant form. It is buttressed by small fillets on either side and looks none the worse for over 200 years of wear. The dial is mounted by three hole fixing on a square capital atop a circular section stone baluster pedestal, itself on a square plinth. A name is inscribed on the south side of the capital: "John D---". The west side of the pedestal has the date 1784.
