BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Hampshire

The dial shows 4am to 8pm in 30, 15, 10 and 2 min intervals with a transversal ’vernier’ scale. It is inscribed ’Made by Tho Wright instrument maker to His Majesty Geo II’. The motto on the crest reads: ’Nil Volentibus Arduum’. There is an EoT ring, and a double meridian ring with noon in various cities including Paris and Charlestown. The dial plate has a 3-hole fixing but the holes have not been punched through, suggesting that the dial has never been mounted, and it is loose on its modern concrete pedestal. [A copy was made in 2002 for protection and security purposes - see SRN 5305.] Ref: EGR Taylor ’The mathematical Practitioners of Hanoverian England’ (1714-1840) p151.
