Lumley Castle (Hotel), Chester le Street

Shows various times 4-8am to 4-8pm in hours. A rhombicuboctahedron dial. All vert faces and 8 reclining faces are square, rest triangular. Roman numbers on S vertical dial, rest Arabic. Mounted on 2.0 metre Tuscan column. Crowning vase with gadrooned top and small pineapple finial. Gatty does not record it but does record a cross dial here that is not now present. R Crossley reports (2000) a possibility that the current dial may have been brought from Heslington Hall in York in the 1960s. Wills Cigarette Card No 5, dated 1928, shows the dial at Heslington Hall, which shows a different orientation of the stone.
