Dial in Hereford & Worcester
Near the church porch is a bronze octagonal horizontal dial which has lost its gnomon. It shows the hours IV - VIII (using XII and IIII) divided into halves, quarters and intervals of 7 1/2 minutes. The numerals are read from inside the chapter ring and there is a split noon line. There are two circles at the gnomon root. Large unusual gnomon slot. Gnomon aligned orthogonally to sides of octagon. 3 hole fixing. Set on tall square section column with no capital. The date 1911 appears on the four-stepped plinth in an inscription commemorating the coronation of King George V. The octagonal pillar bears the date 1692 and the initials NB. Was there an earlier dial here or is this dial older than it looks? Arthur Mee (The King’s England) writes of "a sundial marking the time for nearly 300 years on the stump of a medieval cross." The dial plate measures 151mm across.
