BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
In the school grounds and visible from a public footpath is a large horizontal dial consisting of an oval slab of stone (axes 1320mm and 1140mm) 68mm thick, in the middle of which is a circular dial plate 500mm in diameter. There are hour lines for 4am to 8pm but the only numerals are those for 6am and 6pm. The copper gnomon 295mm in length is detachable as a safety measure. Round the edge of the slab is inscribed ’In gratitude to the headmaster and staff at Abberley Hall. Alexander and Finan Letts 1988-1997. CAL & JML 1996’. The dial is supported on a tapering fluted column 725mm high.
