BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Renold Building, UMIST, Manchester

The original dial on this site, mounted on the rear of the Renold Building, was donated in 1974 to mark the 150th anniversary of the institution, which was then The Mechanics’ Institute. Some time in the 1980s it was replaced by the current dial, which is coloured in shades of blue, green and buff with gold lettering. It shows only the hours from 6.00 am to 4.00 pm, with six declination lines, the symbols of the zodiac and nodus. The original dial was made by Albert Speakman (1913-1986) with a group of undergraduate students. It is said to have been multi- coloured, and designed to celebrate a UMIST led break through on prisms! Mr Speakman was a senior technician at what was then the Manchester College of Technology, involved in projects such as developing hip replacements and opening up the Dead Sea scrolls.
