The Historic Dockyard, Chatham

This dial is located in one of the side gardens to the Commissioner’s garden. An inscription around the perimeter reads: ’This garden of Commissioner’s House was replanted in memory of the Royal Marines killed at Deal 22 September 1989’, referring to the IRA bombing of the Royal Marines School of Music. The dial stands on a fluted circular section pillar (900 high). It shows the hours from 7am to 5pm using Arabic numerals (noon omitted), with hour lines to a very small semicircle around the gnomon root, and no subdivisions. The gnomon has cast into it a figure of a Royal Marine Drum Major, his mace forming the lower end of the style. The maker, D King, was the Assistant Surveyor at the Dockyard where the dial is thought to have been cast. UPDATE: In 2024 the top section and the north support of the gnomon were found to have been removed.
