BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
This prominent dial, visible for miles around, is set atop a hill 3m WSW of Whitley Bay, surmounted by the spoil heap resulting from the construction of a local factory. The hill is 94m high and the dial rises a further 6m to make it the highest point in the Metropolitan Borough of North Tyneside. The iron gnomon has cast into it small figures created by the children of a local school. The hour lines are railway lines. The ascent to the dial makes a pleasant walk and the view from the dial is spectacular.
