BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
Time has indeed left its mark on this 18th century dial, which lies within formal gardens belonging to Island Hall. The house itself was built in the 1740s so the dial too might very well date from then.
Wear and tear and verdigris have had their way with the bronze dial plate, and though hour lines and numerals are still readable there is an indecipherable ring which may (or may not) have given information on the equation of time. The dial is set on a rectilinear octagonal stone plinth with a carved arch design inset to the sides.
Access is restricted since the opening of Island Hall is limited to Sundays in the summer.
