BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

The dial is an Armillary Sphere with 5 rings, located on the village green. It was presented to the village in 1949 by the News Chronicle, to commemorate the ’Loveliest Village in the North’. It is mounted on top of a c10ft cylindrical fluted stone column - too high to be read. There is scroll decoration on the upper end of the gnomon, which is oriented quite a few degrees west of north.
