Pitting in the bronze surface of this horizontal churchyard dial makes it difficult to read, but Gatty records that an inscription around the edge read ’Vive memor quam sis aevi brevis. Hor’ [’Live mindful of how short-lived thou art’, from Horace’s Satires ii. 6,97] H. Porter of Westfield delin & Sculpt 1748 Lat 53 38’. (The Church History records the maker as H Parker.) A 16-point compass rose at the centre is labelled to WNW etc. Around this is an anti-clockwise EOT scale. The chapter ring holds Roman hour numerals read from outside, for at least 6am to 6pm but possibly no more, suggesting that there may have been extensive decoration or inscription in the southerly section. The thick gnomon held by full-length quarter-round ribbed supports, and is pierced to an unusual shape which might form initials (P? R? T?), but no more is known. There is an unexplained circular hole of 1 cm diameter in the dial plate to the west side of the gnomon.
The dial is mounted on a weathered round sandstone baluster pedestal 1320 mm in height, which features an ornamented top and square base and is set on a circular stone foundation.
