BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Afan’s Church, Newbridge on Wye

The village of Llanafan Fawr (’Llanafan Major’) is not marked on 3 inch road maps. The church is opposite the Red Lion Pub, 4m SW of Newbridge on the B4358. The dial is on the south wall of the tower. The tower was erected in 1765 but the dial is thought to be later - possibly from the time of rebuilding in 1850-60. It shows 6am to 6pm, with hours marked by full lines to an inner semicircle around the gnomon root, and 30 and 15 min marks on an outer rectangular scale. Roman numerals at the base (10-2 ) are tilted in line with hour lines, others are set vertically. Uses XII and IIII. There is room for a motto above the gnomon but none is visible because of spalling. Open gnomon, no split noon line. The noon line appears to be covered by patch repair.
