Buckland Abbey [NT], Yelverton

In the west window of the long gallery is a stained glass sundial designed by Christopher Daniel and made by Goddard and Gibbs. It dates from 1998, the 400th anniversary of the death of Sir Francis Drake who once lived here. A 16-point compass rose marks the point from which the hour lines radiate as loxodromic lines on an Atlantic chart. The Golden Hind is depicted sailing down the 8 o’clock line towards Porto Bello, the site of Drake’s burial.
