BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Mary’s Church (2), Childrey

Rectangular vertical south-facing dial. The dial has full length and deeply inscribed hour lines from 8am to 6pm. There is a semi circle at the gnomon root but the hour lines cross it. Note the dots at the outer ends of most of the hour lines. Roman hour numerals use XII at noon and IIII at 4pm. Many are upright but some are aligned with the hour lines. The wall declines slightly west of due south, so you would expect the gnomon to slope down to the right, as it does, and for the 6am-6pm line to slope down to the right. The 6pm line seems correct, but there’s something wrong with the 7am line. The gnomon is a simple pierced triangle. Above the dial are inscribed ’I T T S’ and ’1707’. ’IT’ and ’TS’ could be the initials of churchwardens. See also the contemporary dial SRN 3677 just round the corner.
