BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Hinton Ampner House [NT], Bramdean

The dial is in the garden to the SW of the house. It stands on a vase pedestal mounted on three large square step stones, on a square flagged base. The mount stone has around the edge ’THE SILENT HOURS STEAL ON’ followed by 1890 (or 1820 or 1860!) Hours are VI - XII - IV - VI, read from the inside, with a split noon. Hours from 7am onwards have 30, 15 and 5 minute divisions outside the chapter ring, with small 3-dot half-hour markers in the outer edge of the ring. 6am to 7am is marked outside the chapter ring with short transversals of three minutes each. 15, 30 and 45 minutes marked in Arabic, read from inside, at least for the hours of 7am to 9am. The solid gnomon has a section cut out at the tip (see photos), and long chamfered supports. A motto around the north side, read from the north, inside the chapter ring, reads: ’Man flee’eth as a shadow and continueth not’. [Job IV is shown, but it is actually Job XIV:2]. In the south gap in the chapter ring, read from the north, ’HINTON AMPNER’, with centralised below it the date 1790.
