BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Scotney Castle [NT], Lamberhurst

This fine 18C dial is set on a square section pedestal (610 high) on the low wall of a moat to the west of the castle tower, on the left as you cross the bridge. The motto at the south reads: ’Tempora si fuerint nubila solus eris’ (Ovid, Tristia, 1.9.5). There is a 16 point compass labelled to NNW etc. Hours are IIII - XII - IIII - VIII, with split noon, and divided to 30, 15, 10 and 2 minutes, with inward pointing half hour lozenge markers. The scale has scrolls at each end and is read from the outside. The gnomon is undercut and has quarter round supporters. The maker’s name ’D Adams, London’, is at the north. The dial has a three hole fixing. Reference: The Mathematical Practitioners of Hanoverian England, EGR Taylor, p303:792
