BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St. Margaret of Antioch Church., Ambleside

Over church porch, declining east. EoT table fills most of dial and is marked ’mf’ and ’ms’ for mins fast and slow. Dr James Dawson of Liverpool was the builder of the church (and of Wray Castle), so may have only commissioned the dial, not actually designed it. At the top of the dial is ’IMD’ for James and Margaret Dawson. The dedication of the church to Saint Margaret of Antioch, the guardian of women in childbirth reflects an aspect of Dawson’s professional career as a physician and surgeon in Liverpool. It is also his wife’s name, although the couple were childless the church was dedicated when Margaret was 66. They are both buried at St Margaret’s.
