BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
Motto reads: "Aut Sol: Aut Nihil". Now in store. A palimpsest plate having been used twice as a dial. Gnomon missing, found in trunk at Dinton Church in 1982/3. Slot cut in plate suggests that the gnomon was separately leaded in. Shows 4am to 8pm in hours and half hours. Small punched circular images denote the half hours. Date on dial is 1395 but that is not confirmed. Design Lat approx 50-52 degs N. Was mounted on stone column in churchyard believed to have been a ’stumped’ cross reduced during the Reformation.
Ref: CSt JH Daniel: Records of Buckinghamshire, Vol 42 (2002), and BSS Bulletin. The dial is now (2010) believed to be in a local museum.
