BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Mary and All Saints Church, Ellingham

A very large and striking painted vertical dial over the porch. The triangular dial, of blue-painted metal sheet with gilded lines, numerals and ornaments appears to be contemporaneous with the porch, which is dated 1720. The dial declines to the east. At the gnomon root is a large gilded sun from whose rays the hour lines, from 6am to 5pm, radiate. A thin triangular chapter ring has half and quarter hour marks. The gnomon is a thin metal rod. The dial is mentioned in many books, including A Mee, ’King’s England’ p153; M Green’, Hampshire Churches’ p12,16; J Betjeman .’Pocket Guide to English churches’ p218; AR Green, ’Sundials’ p152; J Barton, ’Hidden Hampshire’ p62.
