BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St. Melor, Linkinhorne

Since Mrs Crowley drew it in 1963 this dial has been re-sited and is now on the south face of the tower, canted westward on a bracket. It had no gnomon in 1963 and deposits of lichen combined with its high position made it difficult to read. It was probably cleaned and provided with its present gnomon when it was moved. In its present position it is shaded at various times by a tower buttress and the church porch. The prominent inscription ’Ex Dono Geo Jeffery AM Vicar’ has left no room for either VI so that the numerals run from VII to V and are divided into halves. Noon is indicated by a decorative symbol. It is a big dial and the date, 1725, and the motto, ’Quasi Hora Sic Vita Fugit’ (Life flies by like an hour) are still easy to read.
