BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.
Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.
On the west terrace is an 18th century bronze horizontal dial measuring 394mm in diameter made byThomas Heath of London who was working between 1720 and 1753 or later. As might be expected from such a maker it is well engraved and carries the Verney coat of arms. It shows the hours IIII - VIII in halves quarters and eighths while on an outer scale minutes are shown with Arabic numerals at 10 minute intervals. The half hour lines have inward fleur-de-lys markers on the outer edge of the chapter ring and and outward pointing lozenges on the inner. There is a circular Equation of Time scale with decorative borders either side of it. At the centre of the dial is a 16-point compass rose with named directions. City names inside the chapter ring have pointers to the minute scale to show exact time of noon at these places. The latitude N 51° 42’ also appears on the dial.
