BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Hough-Hole House, Rainow

The dial is in the Mellor garden, laid out by James Mellor in the middle of the 19th century as an allegorical representation of the story of John Bunyan’s ’Pilgrim’s Progress’. Mellor was a Swedenborgian. The dial stands in front of the ’celestial palace’ at the end of the trail, on a hexagonal column widening towards the base, surmounted by a hexagonal slab. Details of the furniture are not available. *** In 1993 the owners sold the house and it is not known whether the new owners will open the garden for public viewing.
